A demolition crew has torn down one of Newcastle's most prominent murals.
The Newcastle Heraldreported two weeks ago that the mural's days were numbered as businessman Darren Nicholson started work on redeveloping his Gibson Street car park.
The six-storey artwork facing King Street was painted on a stairwell exterior by Melbourne artist Adnate and another creative during the Hit The Bricks street art and graffiti festival in 2014.
The car park redevelopment includes 50 serviced apartments on King Street, three levels of office space on top of the existing car park and a childcare, gym and cafe at ground level.
Mr Nicholson, whose Bolton Street parking garage features another large Adnate work, said the new building could feature a fresh mural or art projections.
"I don't have a problem in seeing it go," he said earlier this month of the King Street mural, which featured two large male faces with animated smiles.
"It's better than just the brick wall, but it's not something I find iconic to the city."
