Demi Lovato was legally blind after drug overdose and still can't drive due to impairment

Demi Lovato has opened up about the devastating side effects of her 2018 heroin overdose.

The singer, 28, had relapsed after being sober for six years at that point and almost lost her life after suffering from a heart attack, three strokes and organ failure.

She has now revealed that she woke up legally blind in an intensive care unit and she is still unable drive due to her vision impairment.

It took about two months to recover enough of her sight to read a book, and blind spots in her vision meant it was nearly impossible to see head-on in the early days of her recovery.

Demi told The New York Times: "It was interesting how fast I adapted.

"I didn't leave myself time to really feel sad about it. I just was like, how do I fix it?"

After the overdose, Demi also had pneumonia from asphyxiating on her vomit and suffered brain damage from the strokes.

Demi has also opened about the night of her overdose in her new four-part series called Demi Lovato: Dancing With The Devil.

She said a drug dealer who provided her with heroin on the night of her overdose in 2018, also sexually assaulted her before leaving her "for dead".

Demi says in a clip from the documentary: "I didn't just overdose. I was taken advantage of.

"When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me.

"When I woke up in the hospital, they asked if we had had consensual sex. There was one flash that I had of him on top of me. I saw that flash and I said yes.

"It wasn't until a month after the overdose that I realised, 'You weren’t in any state of mind to make a consensual decision.'"
