Demi Lovato has come under fire for partnering with conspiracy website Gaia that is a ‘hub for QAnon influencers’.
The singer, 29, announced the news on Instagram, and revealed they were teaming up with the controversial streaming site in an effort to “understand the world around us”.
“Thrilled to be a @wearegaia ambassador. Understanding the world around us (the known and the unknown) is so exciting to me! Check out my stories to learn more!” Demi captioned a snap of them holding their phone with the Gaia app open on the screen.
Gaia is well known for publishing controversial content, including conspiracy theories about vaccines, aliens, secret space programs, 9/11, and lizard people, and in a statement, a spokesperson for the site revealed Demi was hooked after watching a show on aliens.
“After several profound experiences practicing Dr. Greer's meditation protocols intended to make contact with extraterrestrials, Lovato became enamored with the study of consciousness,” they added.
Demi said they were excited “to be one of Gaia's first celebrity ambassadors”, and were honoured to join a platform they “have been a fan of for some time”.
“Understanding the world around us, both known and unknown, and diving deeper into areas that expand our consciousness is exciting to me and I am honored to be able to be a part of a community of people who want to do the same,” the actress and singer added.
However, they’re facing a harsh backlash on social media, and fans have taken to Twitter to air their disappointment - and concern - over Demi’s partnership with the conspiracy theory site.
“Oh my god demi lovato is a paid spokesperson for gaia im gunna scream what the hell demi are you okay,” one wrote.
“i feel bad bc they’re someone who’s gone through addiction and mental illness and places like gaia FEED on people like that,” another added. "but it’s also dangerous as f**k.”
“Demi Lovato has a sponsorship with Gaia and this alarms me a tiny bit. Get that cash I guess, but also Gaia is a major entry point on the pastel QAnon pipeline?” one posted.
Another worried fan tweeted: “Look if you actually care about demi lovato you should want to get them as far away from Gaia as possible.”
“Please be a responsible ambassador. There is enough harming folks. And a lot is attributed to what has come out and is supported by this site,” one frustrated follower commented on her Instagram post.
“Omg you joined a cult! No,” another exclaimed.
Some of their fans and followers were supportive of their latest venture.
“Yes Demi help people around the world awaken to their true self!” one wrote, as another added: “Thank you for always using your platform and your voice for this! We love you bb.”
A number of stories on Gaia focus on the subject of alien life, and last month, Demi revealed they felt that the term “aliens is a derogatory term” for extraterrestrial beings.
“I really think that if there was anything out there that would want to do that to us, it would have happened by now,” Demi told Pedestrian. 'But I think that we have to stop calling them aliens because aliens is a derogatory term for anything.”
