Demi Lovato has revealed she had brain damage following a near fatal heart attack and three strokes as a result of a drug overdose in 2018.
Former Disney child star Demi, now 28, spoke about her struggle in a YouTube trailer for her new documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil.
Demi, who has struggled with addiction, said she 'crossed a line that I had never crossed' in her health battle when she took an overdose in July 2018.
She said doctors gave her just minutes to live, revealing: "I had three strokes. I had a heart attack. My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes.
She added: 'I’ve had so much to say over the past two years wanting to set the record straight about what it was that happened."
"I’ve had a lot of lives. Like my cat, you know? I’m on my ninth life."
Demi, who spoke at the documentary's Television Critics Association panel with director Michael D. Ratner, spoke of the effects she still suffers from following the damage to her brain.
According to People, she said: "I was left with brain damage, and I still deal with the effects of that today. I don't drive a car, because I have blind spots on my vision.
"And I also for a long time had a really hard time reading. It was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was like two months later because my vision was so blurry.
She added: "I dealt with a lot of the repercussions and I feel like they are still there to remind me of what could happen if I ever get into a dark place again."
"I'm grateful for those reminders, but I'm so grateful that I was someone that didn't have to do a lot of rehabbing. The rehabbing came on the emotional side."
Sorry Not Sorry singer Demi's documentary, which airs on YouTube on March 23, will look at her life of starting as a child star to her future battles with mental health and addiction.
The doc features interviews with Lovato, her friends, family members and other musicians, including Elton John and Christina Aguilera.
Her recent engagement to Max Ehrich - which ended after two months - also comes under the spotlight in the four-parter.
Sorry Not Sorry singer Demi relapsed in 2018 after being sober for a solid six years and almost lost her life.
Following her overdose, Demi spent two weeks recovering in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
She then returned to rehab for a number of weeks until she felt well enough to head back into the real world.
At the 2020 Grammy Awards, Demi showcased her comeback as she took to the stage to perform her song titled Anyone which was written days before her overdose and which she says was "a cry for help."
