Demi Lovato says 'patriarchy' held them back from coming out as non-binary

Demi Lovato has revealed how the 'patriarchy' was stopping them from coming out as non-binary.

The pop star, 28, recently made the announcement in a moving video, telling fans they have changed their pronouns to they/them.

Since sharing the honest social media post, Demi has spoken out about their decision and explained that the patriarchy was 'putting me in a box' and that they were 'living my life for other people'.

Speaking to actress Jane Fonda on her Fire Drill Fridays, the singer said: "After years of living my life for other people, trying to make myself smaller for the patriarchy, they run the industry, they are at the centre of everything.

"When I realised that, I thought, 'What are the ways that the patriarchy has been holding me back?' And for me, it was putting me in a box telling [me], 'You are a female, this is what you're supposed to like, this is what you're supposed to do, don't dream bigger and don’t speak louder.'"

Patriarchy has been described as a society in which men have the power and often play dominant roles.

Earlier this month, Demi said they are "so happy now" after coming out as non-binary on social media.

At the time, they said: "I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me feel more authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering."

They later spoke about being non-binary on their podcast 4D with Demi Lovato, describing it as "freeing".
