Demi Lovato is making a high-profile return to the Grammy stage

LOS ANGELES _ Demi Lovato is returning to the stage, and it's a big one: The beleaguered star will perform at the 62nd Grammy Awards later this month.

The "Confident" and "Sorry Not Sorry" singer made good on a tease she began in early December, announcing Tuesday on Instagram that she'll be joining the awards show telecast: "I told you the next time you'd hear from me I'd be singing."

The Recording Academy also confirmed Lovato's participation shortly after her announcement.

The 27-year-old has publicly struggled with sobriety and was treated for a drug overdose in July 2018. A globally viewed Grammy performance is quite an ambitious undertaking for someone who has stayed out of the spotlight for some time.

Lovato is no stranger to the Grammy stage. In 2016, she performed alongside Lionel Richie, Tyrese, John Legend, Luke Bryan and Meghan Trainor during the 58th ceremony. The following year, she took part in a Grammy salute to the Bee Gees that included performances by Andra Day, Little Big Town, Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Dnce.

This year, Lovato joins another star-studded roster of new and veteran performers at the show: Aerosmith, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Ariana Grande and top nominees Lizzo and Billie Eilish will also take the stage Jan. 26 when CBS airs the awards-show telecast. More performers are expected to be announced as the date approaches.

In November, Lovato took part in a Teen Vogue summit that served as an unofficial wellness check for the star.

"All I have to say is, I'm healthy. In that statement, I express gratitude. I am grateful for my strength and things I can do with my body. I am saying I'm healthy, and I accept the way my body is today without changing anything," she said, noting at one point that she loves the person she is today.

At the time, she also said that she had new music on the way but that she was "so cautious this time around of jumping back into things," so it's unclear if she'll be performing new or old songs at the Grammys or whether she'll be participating in another group performance.
