Demi Lovato explains reason why they decided to change pronouns

Demi Lovato has opened up why they decided to re-adopt she/her pronouns in addition to going by they/them.

The former Nickelodeon child star, 30, first announced that they were gender non-binary in 2021 and would be going by they/them pronouns. Last year however they decided to also use she/her pronouns after growing frustrated at having to constantly explain it to people.

“I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting,” said Lovato, 30, in a new interview with GQ Hype Spain, translated from Spanish to English.

“I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

The Skyscraper singer said that they wish there were more gender-neutral spaces for people like them.

“I face this every day. For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it,” they told the publication.

Another gripe is when it comes to filling out government documents or other official documents which generally only present two options to specify gender.

Lovato explained: “You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me.”
