Demi Lovato identifies as non-binary and will use the pronouns they/them.
The pop star wrote a lengthy post on Instagram to fans earlier this morning and said that the announcement came after a “lot of healing and self-reflective work”
In a moving video, Demi said that they/them pronouns ‘best represents the fluidity they feel in their gender expression’.
Non-binary is used to describe those who feel their gender cannot be defined as male or female.
They said in a statement: “Everyday we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be.
“I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you…you’ve seen the good, the bad and everything in between.
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the camera.
“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all - I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.
“This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.
“Sharing this with you now open another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.
“Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way.”
Many fans have their expressed their pride in the singer and described them as a ‘role model’ in response to the post.
Demi recently told fans that they are pansexual during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in March.
The 28-year-old star has been outspoken on LGBTQ+ issues throughout their career.
In 2016, Demi cancelled gigs in North Carolina with Nick Jonas after an anti-LGBT bill was passed in the US state.
Demi's announcement comes shortly after their harrowing documentary Dancing With The Devil, which saw them look back on the drug overdose that almost claimed their life.
