Demetri Mitchell released by Manchester United as former Hearts loanee leaves Old Trafford after 13 years

Former Hearts loanee Demetri Mitchell has left Manchester United after his contract expired.

The 23-year-old was initially signed on loan by Craig Levein in January 2018, and impressed at left back, netting a Scottish Cup stunner against St Johnstone.

His first spell in maroon looked to have been cut short by a knee injury which required a return to Manchester for treatment.

But he was back training sooner than expected and was able to feature in the Jambos’ final two games of the season.

Mitchell returned for a second loan spell at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, signing a season-long deal, saying he had “unfinished business” at the club due to his previous injury.

Despite being played further forward, Mitchell didn’t hit the heights he had during his previous stint in maroon, and was in and out of the team.

Once again, his time at Tynecastle was cut short due to another knee injury, sustained in the Scottish Cup win over Junior outfit Auchinleck Talbot.

There was to be no early return to action either as Mitchell didn’t feature again for the Jambos.

And he’s now on the hunt for a new club after 12 years at Old Trafford came to an end with the expiry of his contract.

United also released Edinburgh-born Ethan Hamilton, who played for capital boys club Hutchison Vale before being picked up by the Red Devils.
