Dementia sufferer, 95, has doors 'left unlocked' by carers

A woman was left furious after she said carers left her vulnerable grandma's door unlocked.

Granddaughter Mariesha Thompson claimed it is the latest incident in a long list of complaints she has about care company Direct Health - part of Accord Housing Association.

The company has cared for Rose Kelly, who has dementia, for the past few years at her Stapleford home.

Mariesha, who is also a carer for her, said: “It came to a head last week when I went round to give my Nanna her sleeping tablets and both the front and back door were unlocked.

“She is constantly at the door wanting to open it because of her dementia. She could’ve been killed if she had gone outside as there is a busy main road nearby.

“I was absolutely fuming, she is my 95-year-old nanna who I have looked after for five years now.”

Mariesha, 35, claimed that when she rang Direct Health to complain, a manager asked “do you want to take her back?”

Mariesha added: “I’ve had a lot of complaints about the company before.

“They’ve left her gas fire on before when her bed was inches away from it, she could’ve been up in flames. If she'd kicked her blanket off she’d be dead by now.

"I’ve also found her tablets all over the floor before. I worked at a nursing home for 17 years, I’m really experienced and I know what should be done. I don’t think they’re taking this seriously.”

She said she has considered changing care companies but said any change to her Nanna’s routine can have a huge effect on her.

Mariesha added: “Some of the carers there are amazing, they treat her like their own relative, but others haven’t had enough training with dementia.

“It’s so frustrating.”

Sue Batty, service director at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Accord have assured us that they are investigating these concerns and are keen to work with us and the family to resolve these issues and ensure they deliver the best care possible.

"On previous occasions, the company have had good feedback from the family about their care.”
