DeMarcus Cousins has advice for Zion Williamson

The All-Star break is behind us and the Golden State Warriors are back to the business of practice and (hopefully) winning games. Their sights, of course, are set on a deep playoff run resulting in a third straight championship.

The Warriors return to the court tonight against the Sacramento Kings at home. During his post-practice media session today, center DeMarcus Cousins was asked about the injury to Zion Williamson: the NCAA Division I standout from Duke who went down with a knee injury last night, just 30 seconds into a hotly-awaited contest between the Blue Devils and the UNC Tar Heels.

The All-Star break did not break Cousins’ stride of saying exactly what he feels. So, naturally, he had strong words. “Knowing what I know now? College basketball is (expletive),” Cousins said.

He added that Williamson should do what’s best for himself and his family, but elaborated, with specific advice targeted directly at the NBA prospect:

[College basketball] does nothing for you at this point. You’ve proven you’re the No. 1 pick coming out. You’ve proven your talent. You know, get ready for the next level. [The injury]’s happened. That’s my opinion. Knowing what I know now … There’s so many risks involved to get to the ultimate goal [of signing with an NBA team].

Cousins added that his college basketball years at Kentucky were “some of the best” of his life. But beyond his rewarding personal experiences, he slammed the NCAA as a “crooked” business.
