Demarai Gray VAR incident explained during Everton loss to Aston Villa

The Premier League have confirmed that VAR did check an incident involving Demarai Gray and Ezri Konsa during Saturday's game between Everton and Aston Villa.

The Blues suffered their first loss of the season in the midlands this weekend thanks to strikes from Matty Cash and Leon Bailey either side of an unfortunate Lucas Digne own goal.

That trio all came in quick succession as the hosts took full advantage of a hectic few minutes in the second half, but they all followed an incident which could have changed the game.

With the scores still at 0-0, Gray looked to get beyond the Villa defence and have an attempt on goal, but appeared to be pulled back by Konsa as the last man.

Referee Craig Pawson decided to not give a foul for the incident, with there being no immediate indication over whether VAR official Paul Tierney had checked the incident.

However, the Premier League have now confirmed to the ECHO that the challenge was indeed checked, but it wasn't identified as a clear and obvious error.

Villa went on to score the three goals that would win the match against an injury-depleted Everton side.

Rafa Benitez will be hoping his squad can bounce straight back in their League Cup clash with Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday, before welcoming Norwich City to Goodison Park on Saturday.
