DeMar DeRozan ‘honors’ his role as a mentor and leader of Bulls

Chicago Bulls All-Star DeMar DeRozan is entering his 14th season in the NBA and is the second-oldest player on the roster at 33-years-old.

As one of the veteran voices on the team, DeRozan has taken a leadership role amongst his peers, whether that’s on the court or off the court, something he truly honors.

“It’s amazing. It’s an honor for those guys to even trust me and look towards me for any type of advice,” DeRozan said. “Even this far in my career, I don’t think I’m bigger or better or no more than the next guy. For guys to come and trust in me in any type of advice, it means a lot to me.”

DeRozan has played the mentor role for several of his young teammates on the Bulls, including Patrick Williams and Ayo Dosunmu. Williams joined DeRozan in Los Angeles this summer for workouts. For Dosunmu, the University of Illinois retired his No. 11 jersey on Jan. 6, which DeRozan made the near five-hour trek to be there for his rook.

“With that, I try to give as much as I can whether it’s through conversation or actions just to show them the way so they can be better,” DeRozan said. “For me it’s an honor because I know what it was like for me when I was young when any older guy came to me with any type of conversation or anything that was helpful to me, I took it and ran with it.”

It’s safe to say that the young players on the Bulls roster are in good hands with DeRozan as their vet.
