Delyn MP Rob Roberts 'facing suspension' from Parliament

Delyn MP Rob Roberts could be facing suspension from the Commons, according to media reports.

Mr Roberts is facing multiple allegations of making inappropriate advances to a junior member of staff.

He has been accused of sending messages to a 21-year-old intern asking if she wanted to “fool around with no strings”.

In the messages, which were reportedly seen and published by the BBC, 40-year-old Mr Roberts is alleged to have told the intern: “Don’t ignore me when I’m making you feel better,” adding she might want to “fool around with no strings, you might come and visit me in London”.

Mr Roberts, who has split up from his wife and publicly came out as gay, also allegedly sent a message saying he “might be gay but I enjoy … fun times”.

The Conservative Party has already said it will not withdraw the whip from the Welsh MP, who was elected in 2019, but the independent parliamentary standards commissioner is investigating

The Mail on Sunday's Anna Mikhailova has reported that the standards commissioner has concluded her report into his conduct and is proposing suspension.

Mr Roberts is currently appealing that decision, according to the Mail on Sunday.

If the appeal is unsuccessful, the proposed suspension will be put to MPs in the Commons for a vote.

If it’s longer than 10 sitting days it could trigger a Recall Petition.

A petition is then started, and kept open for six weeks. If 10% of eligible registered voters sign the petition then the recall process has been successful and the seat becomes vacant, prompting a by-election.

If the required number is not reached the petition fails and the MP remains in post.

The recall petition facility has only been used three times. Once was for Conservative Chris Davies after he admitted forging expense documents. The recall petition was successful, and a by-election held in August 2019.

Mr Davies stood for election again but lost to Lib Dem Jane Dodds. She held the seat until the snap election in the December when she lost to Conservative Fay Jones. Ms Dodds was elected as a regional MS in the Senedd election of May 2021.

The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner had no comment to make.

Mr Roberts has also been contacted for comment.
