DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. _ A Deltona mother pulled over on the side of Interstate 4 after she overdosed on heroin and then she passed out, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Her three children were stuck in the minivan and her 12-year-old daughter called for help.
Volusia County Sheriff's deputies and paramedics responded about 7 p.m. Thursday to mile marker 114 on eastbound Interstate 4.
"My mom won't wake up and we are on I-4 in the car," the girl told the 911 responder as another child screamed in the background.
"We are in the grass and we are close to a ditch," she said.
Paramedics used Narcan to revive Tiffany Smith, 28. She told them she was driving to South Carolina when her back started to hurt so she said she took some heroin, the Sheriff's Office said.
The children _ the 12-year-old, a 7-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy _ were not injured and were placed in the custody of their grandmother. Two dogs in the minivan were turned over to Volusia County Animal Control officers.
Smith was admitted to AdventHealth Fish Memorial in Orange City, where she was in stable condition. She was not immediately booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail, pending treatment at the hospital.
