Delta variant cases of Covid have risen 46% in a week across the UK

The number of cases of the Delta variant of coronavirus have risen 46% in a week across the UK, new figures show.

Public Health England (PHE) said there had been 35,204 more cases since last week to reach a total of 111,157 - a 46% increase.

Public Health Wales, which published new figures on Thursday, June 24, said 209 more cases have been identified since Monday to take the total to 788.

It comes as Wales has seen the biggest rise in Covid cases in a 24-hour period since early February with 438 more infections being reported on Thursday.

Of the 111,157 cases of the Delta variant in the UK, 102,019 have been in England, 7,738 in Scotland, 788 in Wales and 612 in Northern Ireland.

But while the Delta variant now accounts for around 95% of new cases sequenced in the UK, PHE said vaccines continue to have a "crucial effect on hospital admission and death".

Current figures show there are now 27 people currently occupying hospital beds with confirmed Covid-19 in Wales, and one in intensive care needing an invasive ventilated bed. See the full cases and infection rate data for every part of Wales here.

While these figures are way down on the first and second peaks, scientists and governments are keeping a close eye on whether they increase over the coming days and weeks.

A total of 1,320 people have been admitted to hospital in England with the Delta variant of Covid-19 as of June 21, a rise of 514 on the previous week, according to the latest figures from Public Health England. Of the 1,320 people, 902 were under the age of 50 while 418 were over 50.

Of the 902 under 50, 695 (77%) were unvaccinated, 79 (9%) within 21 days of their first dose of vaccine, 85 (9%) more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine and 27 (3%) were fully vaccinated.

Of the 418 over 50, 136 (33%) were unvaccinated, nine (2%) within 21 days of their first dose of vaccine, 104 (25%) more than 21 days after their first dose of vaccine and 163 (39%) were fully vaccinated.

As of June 21, there have been 117 deaths in England of people who were confirmed as having the Delta variant and who died within 28 days of a positive test. 109 were over 50.

Dr Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, said: "Through the success of our vaccination programme, data suggests we have begun to break the link between cases and hospitalisations. This is hugely encouraging news, but we cannot become complacent.

"Two doses of vaccine are far more effective against Covid-19 than a single dose, so please make sure that you come forward to get your second dose as soon as you are invited.

"Whilst vaccines provide excellent protection, they do not provide total protection, so it is still as important as ever that we continue to exercise caution.

"Protect yourself and the people around you by working from home where possible, and by practising 'hands, face, space, fresh air' at all times."

PHE also said a further variant, Lambda (C.37), has been designated as a variant under investigation (VUI) due to a rise in international cases and several notable mutations.

Six cases of Lambda have been identified in the UK to date, all of which have been linked to overseas travel.

PHE said tests were ongoing and there is currently no evidence that this variant causes more severe disease or renders vaccines less effective.

The body also said the figures for variants this week are likely to be an underestimate owing to an operational issue being investigated by the Wellcome Sanger Institute on potential cross-contamination of a number of positive Covid-19 samples.

PHE said these samples were PCR tested before they were sent to the Sanger Institute, meaning people have received their correct test result and positive cases told to isolate.
