Ipswich rapper DELS bubbled up in early 2008 with a fun but forgettable track called "Lazy" produced by Joe Goddard of Hot Chip. Three years on, his debut LP, also featuring Goddard, shows that serious advances have been made. DELS can still do bubbly and fun, but he can also do dark and weird and – on "DLR" and "Droogs" – thoughtful and sad. More impressive than his fluid, stream-of-consciousness raps is his musical vision. Alongside Goddard and main producer, Kwes, he creates tracks that court the unexpected and dare to evolve beyond mere beats. "Trumpalump" and "Moonshining" are terrific examples.
