Delivery van driver left balancing on park wall after reversing slip

This was the moment the delivery of numerous packages to South Bristol stopped for the day on Friday, after a van driver reversed a little bit too far backwards.

The driver of the DPD van - complete with ‘Your delivery experts’ written on the side - ended up wedged on what was left of a low wall, and couldn’t get back onto the road again.

The incident began on Friday afternoon on Nutgrove Avenue, and ended up half on Nutgrove Avenue, and half in Victoria Park.

No one was hurt in the incident, and some local residents reported that the driver of the van said his handbrake failed, while others said the van driver appeared to simply reverse too far while executing a three point turn.

The location is across the park from Totterdown, the setting for Adge Cutler’s classic Wurzels song about just this very thing - Thee’s Got’n Where Thee Cassn’t Back’n, Hassn’t - a song which tells the story about a couple called Flo and Joe executing a three-point-turn on a narrow hill in Totterdown and who ‘got’n in a fine old mess somehow’.

Andrew Bolton-Jones-Dixon and his family came across the scene on a visit to nearby Windmill Hill.

“We were driving past, and we were quite shocked, but also slightly amused,” he said. “I felt embarrassed for the driver, but there’s a degree of schadenfreude there too.

“It was just left there balancing on the wall, and it's a shame because that's obviously badly damaged the wall itself there. I don't know how they ended up getting it off - maybe they needed a crane of some sort,” he added.
