Delivery rider seriously hurt in crash

Concern about the safety of food delivery riders escalated after a string of deaths and injuries. (AAP)

A food delivery rider is in a serious condition after a crash in the Sydney's south only metres from where another rider died while working last year.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Princes Highway and Rockdale Plaza Drive around 9pm on Friday, following reports of a crash between a car and a motor scooter.

The 20-year-old scooter rider was rushed to St George Hospital in a serious condition to undergo surgery for head injuries.

Bijoy Paul, from Bangladesh, died less than 250 metres away in November after being hit by a car while delivering for Uber Eats.

There has been a spate of similar incidents, with five others dying in NSW while delivering food in the gig economy late last year.

Representatives from Uber Eats and other platforms, unions and NSW government agencies have since met to discuss driver safety following the string of deaths.

The driver of the Toyota Rav 4 - a 22-year-old woman - was taken to hospital for mandatory testing before helping police with their inquiries.

Police are calling for any motorists with dash cam footage to come forward.
