Delivery driver's van stolen as he visits elderly neighbour

A retired delivery driver's van was stolen as he visited an elderly neighbour.

Peter Taylor was visiting a friend and pulled up outside her property on October 31. Mr Taylor, who delivered parcels in the area for 24 years, left his van parked on the road while he walked to the front door and rang the bell.

But before the door had even opened, someone jumped into the driver's seat and made off with the 19-plate van, complete with Mr Taylor's house keys.

South Wales Police said it is the second time in two weeks a delivery-type van has been stolen in the area.

Mr Taylor, 65, is well-known in the area for delivering parcels with his pet husky dog, Ice, by his side, until he retired a few years ago.

Friend Nathan Britton, who posted the video footage on Facebook of the moment the van disappeared, picked Mr Taylor up after his van had been stolen.

"Normally Peter has his husky with him in the back who would have been enough to put off any thief," he said.

"Peter had got to the door but as he looked back the van had just gone."

Mr Britton's video has already had over 12,000 views as people share it to try and get Mr Taylor's van back to him.

The van, registration number BP19 LKE, was only bought in March and had less than 5,000 miles on the clock. It was taken from Heol Dowlais in Efail Isaf, between Cardiff and Pontypridd.

A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed the theft had been reported to them on October 31. They said: " An investigation is now underway to identify those responsible for the theft which occurred just before 2pm. A similar incident occurred in Treforest on 19 October.

"Delivery drivers – especially in the run up to Christmas – are urged to be vigilant when going about their work. In both cases, drivers had momentarily left their vehicles unattended while taking parcels to customers."

Anybody who has information about the thefts can contact South Wales Police via 101 quoting reference *402554 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
