Delivery driver attacked and bike stolen as teen arrested

By Abigail Nicholson

A teen was arrested after a delivery driver was attacked and had his bike stolen in Liverpool City Centre.

A gang of four men approached a delivery driver on Byrom Street at around 7.15pm on Thursday, May 5, and shouted at him to give them the bike he was riding. When the man continued to ride away from them, one of the suspects assaulted him and rode off with his bike.

Merseyside Police officers who were on patrol in the area later spotted a boy riding a delivery owner’s bike matching the description of the stolen bike. Officers then arrested a 16-year-old boy from Roby on suspicion of robbery and possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

He was taken into custody, interviewed and released on bail, preventing him from entering Liverpool City Centre.

Detective Inspector Neil Dillon said: "This was an unacceptable attack on a man who was just trying do his job in our community. The arrest made yesterday shows that we simply will not tolerate such attacks and robberies on those working on our streets.

"Following such robberies of delivery drivers, we have investigated a number of incidents, and made arrests but are determined to ensure the riders do not continue to be targeted in this way and to bring offenders to justice. We are also urging cyclists, particularly those undertaking takeaway deliveries, to be vigilant and report any incidents to police so that we can take action."
