Deliveroo’s Grand Canal clean up initiative returns this Bank Holiday weekend and here's how you can get involved

Bank Holiday weekends mean different things to all of us.

Sadly, for the Grand Canal area it can mean widespread litter, affecting the environment and by extension, the planet.

Deliveroo has announced that it will be running its canal clean up initiative again on Saturday 4 May at 10am, rewarding volunteers with credit to their Deliveroo account.

The initiative, which was also held successfully in 2018, will be held along Charlemont Mall and aims to get more people involved with clean up activities.

Dublin weather forecast as Met Eireann says there's rain on the way before pleasant Bank Holiday weekend with 'anticyclonic conditions' bringing the sunshine

For a small part of your Saturday, you will pick up rubbish around the canal areas of Charlemont Mall.

You will be provided with buckets, litter pickers and gloves, and upon return with a full bucket of rubbish, a €10 credit voucher to spend on Deliveroo.

After the chaos brought by Storm Hannah last week, the majority of the nation will be no doubt outdoors soaking up the sun, with warm and dry weather expected.

This coupled with the Bank Holiday weekend approaching, the accumulation of rubbish along the banks of the canal and other public areas will unfortunately be there for all to see.

Deliveroo has taken many strides to reduce its carbon footprint, with the introduction of sustainable, non-plastic, eco-friendly packaging over the past year as well as opt-in cutlery options.

A spokesman for Deliveroo said: “It’s fantastic to see Irish people enjoying this spell of good weather as people eat and drink outdoors, but in doing so we must be respectful of the local environment.

“It’s great to see the many volunteer groups that regularly meet up to clean up the surrounding areas, such as Friends of the Grand Canal, and we want to do our part this weekend with the help of willing volunteers.”

If you are looking to take part, the clean up will take place along the canal banks of Charlemont Mall from 10am until 6pm, and passersby are invited to take part for a short time to receive credit for use on the Deliveroo app or website.
