Deliveroo riders were once again out protesting over pay and working conditions in Nottingham city centre.
They were protesting over a recent change in the way riders can log on to the platform to take orders that they say means riders' real earnings drop to below minimum wage.
Riders have have recently affiliated to the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain for representation.
Alex Marshall, chairman of IWGB Couriers’ Branch, said: “Every time Deliveroo introduce a change it comes at the cost of the workers' wages.
"On a monthly basis they are finding innovative ways to drive down the cost of labour and this is hammer blow after hammer blow for our members.
"The main innovation coming from this gig economy company is how they manage to keep finding new ways to exploit their work force and these strikes show that riders have had enough.”
Protesters added Deliveroo have also recently introduced a change in the way fees are calculated for their workers.
Greg Howard, secretary of IWGB Couriers’ Branch, said: “The IWGB have worked closely with Nottingham Riders to continue our nationwide campaign to gain fair access to work for all and a fair wage which encompasses and covers expenses, so that couriers can live comfortably without worry.
"We’re seeing that riders are now receiving less than a customer pays in delivery fees, that is on top of a 50p service charge on each order and up to 32 percent restaurant commission.
"Internationally couriers are facing challenges to their day to day work from the food delivery Goliaths like Deliveroo.
"Couriers across the world are organising to fight the precarious and exploitative nature of these archaic employment practices.”
In a long running campaign against Deliveroo, the IWGB have previously won a fee increase in Nottingham, Rider Income Protection Insurance, temporary recruitment freezes, fee boosts and the ability for riders to reject orders, allowing them to work wherever and whenever they like.
The demands of Nottingham Deliveroo riders are:
- "Remove free login, allowing riders to maximise their hourly wage.
- "Revert the fee change back to the previous minimum of £3.90 for cyclists and £4.15 for motorised vehicles.
- "Remove vehicle priority to enable a fair access to work for all."
Deliveroo was contacted for a response, but did not respond by the time of publication.
