'Deliveroo rider' in his 20s injured after being hit by car

A main road was closed after a man was knocked off his bike after being struck by a car.

Emergency services were called to Lawrence Road in Wavertree on Tuesday to reports of a crash between a blue Golf Volkswagen and a cyclist.

The cyclist, a man in his 20s, was said to be working for Deliveroo at the time of the incident, shortly after 7.30pm.

He was taken to hospital with an injury to his leg.

Merseyside Police said the driver remained at the scene to assist police with their investigation.

The road was closed after the crash while police carried out their enquiries.

A Deliveroo Spokesperson: “Riders are at the very heart of our business and their safety and well-being is our absolute priority.

"We take every step to ensure they feel safe on the roads and we have a dedicated Rider Engagement team in place, as well as a support phone line so we can assist our riders and make sure they feel supported at all times.

“We were also the first delivery platform to give all riders free insurance to protect them in case something goes wrong while on the road, and we are constantly introducing new security measures such as sick pay.”
