Deliveroo has said it will offer their customers a contact-free food delivery service amid the current coronavirus outbreak.
The delivery company launched the new feature this week to enable customers and riders to choose contact-free delivery if they wish to avoid making physical contact with eachother.
Workers will be able to see when a customer has picked the contact-free option in the order’s delivery notes and will then follow a simple process to ensure there is no contact when the food is delivered.
They will be asked to let the customer know when they have arrived before they place their thermal bag open on the ground outside their door.
The delivery person will then step back at least one metre and wait nearby for the customer to collect the food before the order can be completed.
Deliveroo riders are also able to make orders contact-less if they wish by letting customers know through the app before they arrive.
It will be available to customers and riders across Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Galway.
Thousands of pubs across the country shut their doors while a large number of restaurants and cafes have seen a massive hit to their business as coronavirus fears continue to grip the nation.
Tens of thousands of staff working in pubs, bars and restaurants were rendered unemployed virtually overnight.
Last week, Deliveroo announced a ‘hardship fund’ for riders, so those who contract the COVID-19 virus or those who have been instructed to be in isolation by a medical authority will be eligible for financial support.
