Deliveroo is slinging free delivery to all of Greater Sydney for the duration of Sydney’s 7-day lockdown starting from midnight tonight, so you can drown your sorrows in a burger.
In order to control the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed that four local government areas in Sydney will be placed under a formal lockdown. Those LGAs are the City of Sydney, Waverley, Woollahraa and Randwick.
That means residents and people who work in those four-inner LGAs will be locking down. But there is a little kangaroo-shaped-light at the end of the tunnel and that’s Deliveroo.
The food delivery service will be offering free delivery to help alleviate stockpiling concerns and also provide ongoing support for Sydney’s local hospitality industry. The deal will run until Friday 2 July at 11:59pm at participating Sydney restaurants, including: Mary’s, Chargrill Charlie’s and Gelato Messina.
“We understand that this recent outbreak in Sydney is challenging for locals and businesses alike, and Deliveroo remains committed to supporting all members of the community through this time,” Ed McManus from Deliveroo said.
We hope that by offering free delivery to all Sydney residents, it will help contain the spread. So, let’s do what we can to stay safe and support our local restaurants.”
The lockdown comes after NSW Health recorded 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases today. However, an additional 17 cases have been identified since 8pm last night, which will be included in tomorrow’s tally.
The four inner-city LGAs that will be plunged into a lockdown tonight (City of Sydney, Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick) will only be permitted to leave home for four key reasons.
- Work or study that can’t be conducted at home
- Care or care giving (which includes receiving a COVID vaccine)
- Shopping for essential goods
- Outdoor exercise in small groups of no more than 10
