Delightful video shows gardai come to rescue with stepladder after women get locked into Howth cemetery

A delightful video has emerged showing gardai help three women to freedom after they were accidentally taken hostage by a graveyard in North Dublin.

Howth gardai rushed to the scene with a stepladder at the ready after the three women got locked in to St Mary's Cemetery on Friday night.

After the women realised their predicament it appears they were left with no choice but to call for help, and officers proved up the task helping all three over the wall and down the ladder to freedom.

The brilliant footage was taken by Jill Redmond who was enjoying a meal nearby as the rescue unfolded.

She told Dublin Live: "I was filming from a lovely restaurant called 30 Church Street.

"It was hilarious, all the people passing by and outside in the beer garden gave them big cheers when they escaped. It was such an Irish thing to witness."

The women can be seen climbing the ladder one-by-one before sitting on top of the wall and passing it over to the other side.

A garda then takes it back and sets it up for them to climb back down.
