Delighted kids across UK receive vital school supplies thanks to kind Mirror readers

The Mirror’s Help a Child to Learn campaign is continuing to support thousands of pupils despite schools reopening from lockdown.

Much-needed education supplies are being given to vulnerable youngsters still shielding at home during the pandemic.

Delighted headteachers across England and Wales have received vouchers worth hundreds of pounds thanks to our campaign.

The fund was launched by the Mirror with the National Education Union, which made a huge £1million donation.

Steph Beale is Head Principle at Ellesmere College, Leicester (SWNS)

Kindhearted Mirror readers donated a further £248,671 to help children and we have been able to deliver materials including pens, paper and calculators to 1,239 schools during the lockdown.

Steph Beale, 42, headteacher at Ellesmere College in Leicester, received a £500 voucher and spent it on stationery and other supplies.

She said: “Every penny counts in times like this.”

The fund was backed by politicians as well as children’s authors Sir Michael Morpurgo and Michael Rosen.

NEU joint general secretaries Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney said they are “proud” the union’s huge donation has helped struggling families.

Chris Mahady, head of schools supply firm Hope Education, which supported the campaign, added: “With 4.2 million children trapped in poverty, ensuring children have the basic resources to learn has never been so important.”
