'Delight' as badly needed city centre swimming pool to reopen in weeks

A badly needed city centre swimming pool is set to reopen in a matter of weeks.

The Sean McDermott Street Swimming Pool closed in 2019 due to its state of disrepair. There were delays in getting funding to refurbish the Dublin City Council-owned pool until 2021.

The extensive works to repair the pool included the pool hall, deck and basin needing to be retiled, repairs to the roof, electrical and ventilation works and a reconfiguration of the reception. They began in February this year and the pool is due to reopen in the first week of July.

DCC are currently in discussion with Swim Ireland who are expected to operate the city centre pool. The cost of using the pool will be similar to other DCC owned pools.

Chair of DCC's Central Area Committee Cllr Ray McAdam said he was "absolutely thrilled" the facility is close to reopening.

He said: "Sean McDermott Street Swimming Pool will reopen from the first week in July. I am delighted to be able to confirm that the renovation works have been completed.

"A deep clean will now take place along with getting all services back online including the filling and heating of the swimming pool itself. The Council is also in the process of finalising a three year deal with Swim Ireland to operate the facility.

"This will see an expansion of the existing arrangement that has been in place and it will ensure a significant increase in public swim hours for the local community as well as facilitating clubs, schools and other organisations."
