Man arrested after fire causes $600k in damage to buildings in Adelaide

Firefighters work to put out a blaze at a shopping complex on Unley Road in Parkside.

South Australian police have arrested a man this afternoon following an overnight fire that destroyed a travel agency and also damaged several other businesses at Parkside.

Fire crews were called to the Unley Road businesses about 3:00am and said the blaze caused more than $600,000 damage.

The building that housed Inflight Travel was gutted while Integrated Chiropractic's offices and another business were also damaged.

"My place has been damaged by smoke, by water," Integrated Chiropractic's Shireen Hodgetts said.

"A very ferocious fire. It's just such a shock and I think you're just a bit numb for a while until you process it all."

Residents heard a loud noise and called emergency services.

"I heard a woman yelling help ... I woke up my mum and dad and they called police," one resident told ABC Radio Adelaide.

A police statement released this afternoon said the arrested man is from Adelaide's western suburbs.

"He is expected to be charged with arson," the statement said.

"Detectives from Sturt CIB and fire cause investigators are conducting further inquiries."
