Deliberate fires in West Dunbartonshire on the rise

The number of deliberate blazes set across West Dunbartonshire have increased with fire chiefs attributing the cause to anti-social behaviour.

In a report set to be presented to the Community Planning West Dunbartonshire board tomorrow (Thursday), local fire and rescue service plan priorities are set out and the latest figures are provided.

For the first quarter of 2018/19, there have been 60 deliberate fires set compared to 45 in the same period last year.

The report reads: “The majority of these incidents are attributable to low level anti-social behaviour and we continue to work closely with partners through monthly anti-social behaviour tasking group meetings.

“We will continue to provide fire skills youth diversionary activities to assist in the reduction of anti-social behaviour and deliver targeted engagement fire setter intervention programmes where individual’s are referred to us from partner agencies.”

Dumbarton care home told to address 13 concerns from inspectors

During the same period, there have been 36 accidental fires within the home with fire chiefs attribute to food being cooked and left unattended.

The report goes on: “Whilst responding to these incidents operational crews engage with residents and if necessary utilise referral pathways to partners to ensure those in need of support are identified and mechanisms put in place to prevent reoccurrences.

“SFRS has launched a national campaign to raise the publics awareness of the dangers.”
