Delhi Traffic Police ties up with navigation platforms to provide real-time road alerts

Getting stuck in a traffic jam because of an unexpected road closure or diversion may soon become less common in Delhi. The Delhi Traffic Police has begun working closely with navigation platforms to ensure that real-time traffic restrictions, road closures and diversions are reflected directly on apps used by lakhs of commuters every day.

On Monday, traffic restrictions around Maharani Bagh remained in force for nearly 12 hours as the Delhi Jal Board carried out repair work on Ring Road. On other days, commuters may encounter road closures due to civic projects, diversions for public events or restrictions imposed for VIP movements.

Such disruptions are a regular feature of Delhi's road network. While Delhi Traffic Police routinely issues advisories through its social media channels, many commuters miss these updates unless they actively seek them out. As a result, road users often learn about closures and diversions only after getting caught in traffic congestion.

To bridge this gap, Delhi Traffic Police is working to integrate navigation platforms more closely into its traffic management strategy so that real-time restrictions are reflected on the apps used by lakhs of commuters every day.

From event-specific coordination to a regular system

Until recently, collaborations between the traffic police and navigation platforms were largely limited to major events requiring extensive traffic management.

During high-profile occasions such as the AI Summit, Republic Day celebrations and preparations for the India-Africa Summit, traffic authorities coordinated with navigation platforms to update road closures, restrictions and diversions. These measures helped commuters avoid affected stretches and plan alternate routes in advance.

Officials said the positive response to these initiatives demonstrated the potential of navigation apps as a direct communication channel with road users. Consequently, the traffic police has decided to institutionalise the process rather than activate it only during major events.

Dedicated coordination with navigation platforms

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said that whenever information about road restrictions was shared with navigation platforms, affected routes were automatically flagged on the apps and users were directed towards alternate routes.

“We have now partnered with Lepton, Google’s Indian mapping partner, and are regularly sharing traffic advisories with them, including those issued on a daily basis. As part of the initiative, dedicated WhatsApp groups have been created to facilitate the rapid exchange of information between traffic police officials and representatives of navigation platforms,” Gupta added.

The WhatsApp groups are being used to share information on road closures, diversions, traffic restrictions, civic works, waterlogging-related disruptions and other developments that may impact vehicular movement.

Advisories to reach commuters directly

Sources said the objective is to ensure that traffic advisories are no longer limited to social media posts or media reports but reach commuters directly through the navigation apps they use before and during their journeys.

The initiative is expected to be particularly useful during the monsoon season, when sudden waterlogging, emergency repair works and traffic diversions frequently disrupt movement on key arterial roads across the city.
