Delhi Traffic Police registered 1,170 FIRs and impounded 1,179 vehicles during a special two-day city-wide crackdown against wrong-side driving, an official said on Sunday.

The enforcement operation was conducted on May 22 and 23 across major roads, intersections, highways and accident-prone stretches in the national capital to curb the hazardous practice of motorists driving against the designated traffic flow.

Over 12,000 challans issued during drive

During the campaign, police also issued 12,568 challans against violators found breaching traffic rules by driving on the wrong side of the road.

Authorities said strict legal action, including seizure of vehicles, registration of criminal cases and prosecution, has been initiated against offenders as part of the drive.

Wrong-side driving identified as major safety risk

A senior police officer said wrong-side driving has emerged as one of the leading causes of road accidents, chaotic traffic movement and head-on collisions in Delhi.

The officer stated that wrong-side driving is not a minor violation but a serious offence that endangers public safety and disrupts smooth traffic flow.

Police issue warning against violations

Delhi Traffic Police also issued a strict warning that anyone found engaging in wrong-side driving will face legal consequences under applicable laws.
