Delhi Traffic Police ‘divided’ for greater efficiency

NEW DELHI: For ensuring transparency, having a streamlined process and to reduce corruption, Delhi Traffic Police has decided to divide its force into two parts—one to deal with traffic regulation and the other prosecution. Senior officers said the deployment of cops would be done automatically through ‘e-chittha’ software.

Delhi Traffic Police presently has a strength of around 5,500 officials. Earlier, around 73% of the force would be deployed on the ground, but in the new system, 86% of the force is likely to be on the ground.

The work of the regulating staff will include manning of important intersections for smooth traffic management in Delhi, keeping a check on no-entry restriction, organising encroachment-removal drives and adjusting traffic signal timings. The other team will focus on checking violations and ensuring that body worn cameras are on while they are prosecuting people to record the commuter behaviour.

Around 600 teams will be deployed in a total of 69 circles across the city. The duty of the regulating staff will be changed every 15 days while that of the prosecution staff every seven days.

An official said earlier one person was performing both the duties, which used to get difficult for them at times. An internal audit suggested that if this system is brought in place, it would not only streamline the work but also result in better productivity.

Surender Singh Yadav, special commissioner of police (traffic), said, “This will bring in transparency, boost efficiency of cops, and also check corrupt practices.”
