Delhi: ‘Termination notice to 90 Anganwadi workers’

NEW DELHI: Over 90 Anganwadi workers and helpers have allegedly received termination letters in the past two days for taking an “active part in the strike.” Delhi State Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union said they expect more helpers to receive similar notices on Monday and that they will go to the Delhi high court against the orders.

The union alleged that after the imposition of the “repressive” Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA) by the lieutenant governor against the strike, Delhi government is now “repressing” the Anganwadi workers as well.

“After ESMA was invoked, Anganwadi workers were returning to work, but the women and child development department is serving termination notices to many agitators. 90 Anganwadi workers and helpers have been terminated from service with immediate effect in the past two days. The department has terminated 117 women so far. We suspect that the department is going to terminate even more workers in the coming days. The department is also forcing the women involved in the strike to write apology letters in an illegal and undemocratic manner,” said the union.

The union said it would also file an appeal in the High Court against all the alleged illegal terminations on Monday.

Delhi government officials did not respond to theallegations.
