Delhi Shaken as Alleged Bus Gang Rape Echoes Nirbhaya Case; Two Arrested

A 30-year-old woman has alleged that she was gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus in the Saraswati Vihar area of Delhi late Monday night. Police have arrested two men in connection with the case, identified as the bus driver Umesh and conductor Ramendra, who have been sent to judicial custody.

Incident near Saraswati Vihar

According to police, the woman, who works at a factory in Mangolpuri and resides in Pitampura with her family, was returning home when she reached a bus stand in the B-block area of Saraswati Vihar.

Investigators said a Bihar-registered sleeper bus stopped near her. When she asked a man standing nearby for the time, he allegedly signaled her to come closer and then forcibly pulled her into the vehicle.

Allegations of assault inside moving bus

Police stated that the bus continued moving for several kilometres towards Nangloi. During this time, two men allegedly sexually assaulted her inside the vehicle. Officials also noted that the bus had curtains covering its windows, limiting visibility from outside.

The woman was later allegedly abandoned near Nangloi Metro station, after which the accused fled the scene.

She managed to contact the police, who reached the location and shifted her to Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for medical examination.

Case registered, accused arrested

An FIR has been registered under gang rape provisions along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Both accused have been arrested and are in judicial custody as the investigation continues.

Political reaction and public concern

The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition leaders drawing parallels to the 2012 case involving Nirbhaya gang rape case. Critics have questioned the effectiveness of women’s safety measures in the capital despite legal and administrative reforms introduced over the past decade.

The case has once again raised concerns about women’s safety in public transport and the enforcement of preventive security measures across Delhi.
