Delhi schools to follow same process as last year for promotion to higher classes

New Delhi: Keeping in mind the prolonged closure of schools due to the pandemic, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has decided to follow the same policy to promote IX and XI students to the next class as it did in the previous year.

The students will be assessed on the basis of the marks obtained in the mid term. The performance in the annual exams and the marks obtained in internal assessment/practicals will be taken together. A grace of up to 15 marks can be given to students so that they can meet the 33% pass criterion in the five main subjects.

These rules will be applicable to students of all schools of Delhi.

"In case a student does not score 33% marks in any one language, i.e., language 1 or language 2, the third language opted for and cleared by the student will replace either of the two languages for promotion to the next class. A maximum of 15 grace marks may be awarded to a student to reach the minimum required 33% of marks in one or any number of subjects only for promotion to the next higher class (sic)," the circular reads.

Despite this, if a student is unable to secure 33% in one or more subjects, they may be eligible to appear in the subject at a subsequent examination to be held within one month of declaration of the annual result known as the "compartment examination".

Students who are absent due to medical reasons or because of participation in sports, or those who have secured late admission, will be allowed to appear in thecompartment examinationsin any/all subjects. However, there will be no gift of grace marks in the compartment examination.

"All government, government-aided and recognised un-aided schools are directed to comply with these guidelines considering the adverse conditions of Covid pandemic leading to stress and anxiety among the students for almost the entire academic session 2020-21. However, if a recognised un-aided school desires to have criterion other than those prescribed in these guidelines, it can do so with the prior approval of the director (education), before the declaration of results," added the circular.

Many private schools have already conducted their end-term examination, with a mix of online and offline options.
