Delhi schools to close from May 11 due to hot weather

Summer vacation for all schools in the national capital will begin from May 11.

The Delhi Government advanced the holidays of private schools on Tuesday because of the heat wave conditions in the city. Government schools usually start summer vacations from May 11 while private institutions have theirs a few days later.

“The decision has been taken looking at the very hot weather prevailing in Delhi and prediction that temperature is likely to rise further,” a government statement said. The order is binding on all schools.

The Capital recorded a maximum temperature of 46.2 degrees Celsius on Monday, the hottest of the season. The mercury dipped on Tuesday because of a cloud and dust cover but still touched a searing 40.

Delhi is reeling under extreme weather as the early-May temperature seldom shoots past the 45-degree mark. Severe heat raises risks of sunstrokes and related ailments, especially in children.

Parents said they were expecting an early vacation. “I didn’t send my son to school today. He is not keeping well because of the heat,” said a housewife in Patparganj.

The capital may get thundershowers or dust storms from May 3 to May 7. But the mercury will rise significantly after May 9, weather officials warned.
