Delhi: Remove all booster pumps from water supply lines, says NDMC

NEW DELHI: To ensure equitable distribution of water in its areas, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has asked people to immediately remove booster pumps from main water supply lines.

If booster pumps are found installed on water supply lines, immediate legal action shall be initiated against the defaulters. It may also result in permanent disconnection of their water connections, the council warned in a statement.

Installation of booster pumps on supply pipelines is illegal, asserted an NDMC official. “However, if required, the consumers can install/continue the use of booster pumps for lifting water from their surface tanks/underground reservoir to overhead tanks,” the official clarified.

Installation of booster pumps on supply pipelines also causes contamination, difficulty in maintaining uniform pressure and distribution network of water supply pipelines. This even leads to an increase in electricity consumption, the civic body stated further.

Members of the civic body and residents have been complaining about erratic water supply in different colonies for a long time.

Kuljeet Chahal, a member of the council, stated that NDMC areas require 125 MLD of water and out of that, only 70-75 MLD water is getting supplied.

In a press conference held last week, NDMC member Girish Sachdeva claimed that supply of potable water in Gole Market was badly affected. “Members of BK Dutt Residents’ Association have also complained about filthy water being supplied to their area. The situation at a JJ cluster near Tughlaq Lane is equally bad due to erratic water supply,” Sachdeva claimed on Tuesday.

There are a total of 19,135 water connections, including 15,978 domestic users, in areas falling under the council’s jurisdiction.
