Delhi: Principal of CVS told to go on leave

NEW DELHI: Delhi University has asked the principal of College of Vocational Studies (CVS) to go on leave to enable an inquiry to be conducted against him in a fair manner.

For several years the college teachers, among them members of DU’s Academic Council, have alleged corruption by principal Inderjeet Singh Dagar.

The letter sent by the university to CVS governing body chairperson Rajan Chopra, on December 6 says, “Ramesh Kumar Tiwari, the semi-professional assistant may be sent on leave instead of being suspended as recommended in the report of the inquiry committee. Prof Inderjeet Singh, principal, be sent on leave to conduct the inquiry in all fairness with immediate effect until further orders.”

The governing body had written to vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh on December 22, seeking DU’s approval for the inquiry as decided by the body on December 18.

The senior-most professor at the college, Anjana Arora Bhatnagar of the department of economics, will be officiating principal.

The financial irregularities relate to purchase of books using library funds but which never reached the college library. The justice Dhingra committee had probed the matter and submitted a report, indicating Dagar’s complicity. The GB unanimously accepted the report and recommended sending the principal on leave.

A letter signed by Chopra was sent to Dagar on January 7. It says, “You are directed not to enter your/this office or to have access to any record files, documents, etc without express written permission in this regard.”

Dagar did not respond to several calls and messages from TOI, seeking his comment on the matter.

Academic Council member Naveen Gaur, who has persistently pursued the matter with DU, said, “This is a welcome decision of the DU administration indicating an intent to act against wrongdoings. I raised the issue of corruption in CVS in the Academic Council meetings in August and December last year."
