NEW DELHI: A day after a medical care attendant and her accountant husband were arrested for allegedly stealing valuables worth Rs 2.4 crore from the Amrita Shergill Marg house of actor Sonam Kapoor and her husband Anand Ahuja, police on Thursday claimed to have recovered the jewellery.
Police said Aparna Ruth Wilson and her husband Naresh Kumar Sagar had told them that they sold the jewellery to a goldsmith in Kalkaji.
“The goldsmith was identified as Dev Verma (40), a Kalkaji resident who also owns a jewellery shop. He was arrested and the stolen items were recovered,” said Rohit Meena, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi).
The recovered items include 100 diamond pieces, six gold chains, six diamond bangles, a diamond bracelet, two earrings, a brass coin and an i10 purchased from the money received after selling the jewellery.
The theft took place on February 11 and was reported on February 23, after which an FIR was registered at Tughlaq Road police station.
Police said Wilson disclosed that while taking care of the actor’s 86-year-old mother-in-law, she saw jewellery worth crores and cash lying in an almirah. “She told Naresh her husband about it and they conspired to steal it. He asked her to steal the jewellery at intervals so it would go unnoticed,” the DCP said.
Meena said Wilson would sedate the victim and steal the jewellery at night. The valuables were stolen over a period of 10-11 months.
“She used to hand them over to Naresh, who would sell them to jewellers and others. They paid debts and medical expenses with this money. A stolen brass coin was recovered from their possession,” the officer said.
