Delhi minister Atishi to administer oath to newly appointed DERC chairperson

Delhi Power Minister Atishi

New Delhi: Delhi's Power Minister Atishi is to administer the oath to the newly appointed interim chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) on Thursday.

According to a press note issued by the Delhi Power minister's office, all Delhi ministers, and senior officers of power department, DERC, power generation companies and ex-officio board members of power companies are expected to attend the ceremony on Thursday.

Retired Justice Jayant Nath is now the interim chairperson of the DERC. Justice Nath who retired from the Delhi High Court in November 2021 was nominated as the interim chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) by the  Supreme Court on August 4 after the LG and the AAP government failed to reach a consensus.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud appointed Justice (retd) Nath as Chairperson of DERC after the Delhi government and office of LG left it to the apex court to choose a former Judge as Chairperson of the Commission.

The Supreme Court earlier said that as Delhi’s Chief Minister and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) could not agree on a name for the appointment of Chairperson of the DERC, it will appoint a person for the post as an ad-hoc measure till the issue is finally decided.

The Delhi government moved the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of former Allahabad High Court judge Justice Umesh Kumar as DERC chairperson on the ground that it was unilaterally made by the Lieutenant Governor without its concurrence.

The DERC has been functioning without a Chairperson for the last four months after previous Chairperson Justice (Retd) Shabihul Hasnain demitted office on January 9, 2023, upon attaining the age of 65 years. (ANI)
