NEW DELHI: The family of a 37-year-old man who met with an accident in Gurgaon on Friday and was later declared brain dead at AIIMS Trauma Centre recently gave consent for organ donation.
Their brave decision has helped give a new lease of life to at least four patients, said Dr Deepak Gupta, professor of neurosurgery at AIIMS. The deceased’s heart was used for transplant in a 17-year-old, while his liver and two kidneys were used to conduct transplant on three other patients — two male and one female.
Dr Aarti Vij, chief of organ retrieval and banking organisation, said in total five brain stem death donations took place at AIIMS this year till May 16. In addition, 104 corneas, four heart valves and four whole bodies were donated at the institute. Of the five brain stem death donations, four took place at AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Last month, AIIMS became the second public institution in the country after PGIMER Chandigarh to conduct a lung transplant. Murali Manoharan, the donor, was a serving soldier in Indian Army, who was declared brain dead at the Army (Research and Referral) Hospital after a road traffic accident. The recipient was a woman in her 30s, sources said.
With rising life expectancy and increase in lung diseases, the demand for lung transplant — the only definitive treatment for a person suffering from end-stage lung disease — has gone up.
