Delhi HC stays Boxing Federation of India's directive against Anurag Thakur faction

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday stayed the Boxing Federation of India’s (BFI) March 7 directive – signed by its president Ajay Singh – that only bonafide and duly-elected members of BFI’s affiliated units are authorised to represent their respective states in the forthcoming elections, scheduled on March 28 in Gurugram.

This development has provided momentary respite to the rival faction – led by senior BJP leader and former sports minister Anurag Thakur – which is challenging incumbent Singh’s ambitious bid to secure a third consecutive term as the federation’s head.

A single-judge bench of Justice Mini Pushkarna issued the order on a petition filed by the Delhi Amateur Boxing Association (DABA), which had prayed before the court that the BFI’s mandate contravened the national sports code, the election guidelines and the federation’s regulations.

Representing the Delhi boxing body, senior counsel Abhijat and Vidushpat Singhania contended that the office order was “monopolistic” in nature and was issued by Singh to oust his electoral rivals by curating the voters' list to ensure his victory.

The court, however, declined to halt the election process by stating that it would proceed as scheduled.
