Delhi floods: Thousands evacuated as low-lying regions get inundated

The Yamuna River is in spate, and India’s capital, Delhi, is yet again gripped by devastating floods. Following non-stop rainfall and after water was released from Haryana’s Hathnikund Barrage, Yamuna’s water level rose far above the danger mark. As a result, low-lying areas have been inundated, roads resembled rivers, and thousands of people have been evacuated to safer locations.

Several important areas, including ITO, Majnu Ka Tila, Yamuna Bazaar, Yamuna Khadar, Wazirabad, and Iron Bridge, are completely waterlogged. Traffic movement has been severely disrupted due to flooding on the Ring Road. In light of this disaster, many schools across the city have declared holidays, while the administration has set up relief camps for flood victims.

The weather department warns that conditions could become even more challenging over the next 24 hours. Four NDRF teams have been deployed in the capital, which have rescued and relocated 1,150 people to safety so far.

We visited several flood-affected areas and relief camps across Delhi to understand people’s struggles and concerns.
