Delhi: Dwarka DCP 'relieved from duty' after 'Uncultured' row

NEW DELHI: Hours after reports of a pub brawl in south Delhi's Greater Kailash around midnight in which a woman was injured, DCP (Dwarka) Shankar Chaudhary was removed from his post on Saturday. The injured woman was taken from the pub, Uncultured, to Max hospital, Saket. No complaint was filed.

In an order issued by the office of police commissioner Rakesh Asthana, Chaudhary was "relieved from duty with immediate effect" and asked to report to headquarters. The ministry of home affairs and the LG have been been apprised of the incident. TOI tried to contact Chaudhary for a comment but he did not respond to texts and calls.

"A PCR call was received in the wee hours of 4th June at PS Greater Kailash in which it was mentioned that an officer of Delhi Police of the rank of DCP has assaulted a lady at a birthday party...Subsequently, a video clip of the victim was received wherein she stated that she along with her family were celebrating the birthday of a family member. The officer concerned was also present with his family," a Delhi Police spokesperson said. Police later issued a statement saying the "family issue" had been "settled". The woman, in her video, called it a "communication gap".

Glass fell on woman during party, say cops

The woman, who sustained injuries in an alleged pub brawl, following which DCP (Dwarka) Shankar Chaudhary was removed from his post, said she was hurt when "a man passed the glass to another".

The woman, in her video statement, said she had gone to Friday night's party, a family get-together, with her husband.

Police initiated an inquiry after the PCR call named the DCP, saying he had assaulted a woman with a glass and a 'general diary' entry was made at the GK police station. Chaudhary's location was confirmed at the Uncultured pub in GK-1 at the time of incident.

"During the function, a glass fell upon the lady and she was injured. The husband of the lady got infuriated upon this as one person in the party was playing with the glass at that time. Due to a miscommunication, the name of the DCP cropped up in the ensuing commotion," the Delhi Police spokesperson added.

She added, "In the complaint, it was written that person was known to Shankar but there was a miscommunication, sorry for the inconvenience... the incident took place around 12.20am, but the complaint was filed later after husband got angry. It was our family matter and has been resolved."
