Delhi Daredevils rout Mumbai Indians thanks to record IPL partnership

An IPL record partnership of 154 between Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy helped the Delhi Daredevils end a run of nine home games without a win by sending the Mumbai Indians to a fifth defeat in six matches this season. Delhi won by 37 runs.

Despite losing Mayank Agarwal for one to the third ball of the innings, an imperious half-century from Iyer, supported by Duminy, quickly put Delhi in control. Some poor bowling in the middle overs from Mumbai’s Kieron Pollard and Jasprit Bumrah, who took one for 55 from his four overs, allowed the Delhi pair to race to the hundred partnership in 11.4 overs with a flurry of boundaries.

The 20-year-old Iyer, whose 83 from 56 balls was the highest score for the Daredevils this season, is sure to have caught the eye of India’s selectors. When he and Duminy took their partnership to 150 in the 16th over it was the highest for any wicket in the 2015 edition of the competition.

After Iyer fell, Angelo Mathews made a useful 17 from eight deliveries, while Duminy carried on past his own half-century and finished with an unbeaten 78 from 50.

The South African then showed his value as an all-rounder, as he took a stunning high catch to remove Lendl Simmons at the top of the Mumbai order. Simmons’ opening partner, Parthiv Patel, continued to strike the ball cleanly in making his top score for the season of 28.

However, Mumbai were left to rue putting the big hitters Rohit Sharma, Pollard and Ambati Rayudu down the order. The required run-rate was above 10 by the time Sharma, who has the highest score in ODI history – 264 for India against Sri Lanka in November 2014 – came to the crease at No4.

Patel went to another excellent high catch, this time by Imran Tahir, before Pollard fell meekly for 10. The leg-spin pair of Amit Mishra and Tahir then tied down Sharma and Rayudu to put the target well beyond Mumbai.

Sharma tried to cut loose but was dismissed for 30 to all intents ending the match as a contest, before Tahir struck three times in a single over to turn the result from a win to a thrashing.

Before the match Mumbai heard that the New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson will miss the rest of the tournament with a fractured finger. He will return home to recover before touring England with his national side next month.
