Delhi airport to use predictive analysis, camera-based solutions to improve operations

NEW DELHI: The Delhi airport is set to implement predictive analytics using artificial intelligence and camera-based solutions to enhance operations amid increasing passenger traffic, revealed a top official.

The airport, the largest in the country, handles 1,300-1,500 flights daily and anticipates over 70 million passengers by March 2024. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar stated that digital solutions, including IoT and AI-based technologies, will be employed for predictive analytics to optimize airport operations.

To address previous congestion issues during the winter season, DIAL is adopting the Airports Operations Centre (APOC) system, which utilizes predictive analytics. APOC predicts footfall based on historical data, enabling proactive manpower deployment planning for entry gates, check-in counters, and security. The airport has also employed a camera-based solution at Terminal 3, utilizing AI to count people in queues and predict waiting times.

Further enhancements include the expansion of Terminal 1, slated for completion by February-end, increasing its capacity from 17 million to 40 million. The airport's overall domestic capacity will then be 40 million in Terminal 1 and 25 million in Terminal 3. DIAL will revisit its 2016 master plan to accommodate the current capacity levels and upcoming developments.
