NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man was killed in a fire that broke out at a packaging unit in Patparganj Industrial Area on Wednesday afternoon. Five workers, who were also inside the building, managed to escape, police said.
The victim has been identified as Veeru, who was from Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh. According to police, the fire was reported on the second floor of the building around 1pm.
Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Services, said five fire tenders were immediately sent to the spot. "Our men found that the fire had erupted on the second floor from where a packaging unit of soil testing kits was being run. Our men entered the building and rescued the man who got trapped. He was immediately taken to hospital," said Garg. Police said he was declared dead at hospital.
"It seems the man had died of asphyxiation. The body has been sent for postmortem and his family members have been informed. A case has been registered to probe the incident," said a police officer. Initial inquiries revealed that the property belonged to Harsh Dahia, a resident of Greater Kailash-III, police said.
Garg said a detailed inspection of the building would reveal the reason behind the fire, which was probably triggered by a short circuit.
