Delfine Persoon would take rematch with Katie Taylor if it is offered soon

Delfine Persoon would take a rematch with Katie Taylor – if the offer comes soon.

At present, the Belgian is focussed on chasing a gold medal at the Olympics.

But the former WBC champion said: “If there is an e-mail tomorrow with an effective rematch contract, I can still accept it.”

As things stand, Persoon will put her pro career on ice next year to try to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

The move could see her meet Irish pair Kellie Harrington or Amy Broadhurst in the London qualifiers, where a top-five finish in the lightweight class will book a ticket for the Olympics.

If Persoon does return to the amateurs, she could be banned for two years by the WBC, who have vowed to sanction pro boxers switching codes. However, the legality of that sanction is unlikely to stand up in court.

“We have chosen to follow the Olympic route. I hope to make it to the Olympic Games. Most people think that I will certainly get there, but it is something difficult,” said Persoon, who was edged out on a majority decision in a unification fight with Taylor last June and feels she has unfinished business with the Bray woman.

The Flanders police officer also feels there’s a big difference between the amateur game and the professional ranks.

The abject displays of pro boxers at Rio 2016 endorses that view as all three fighters who qualified – including ex WBO World champion Hassan N’Jikam – failed to win a fight and crashed out in the preliminaries.

“Amateur boxing is over three rounds. It is a completely different discipline. It is like having to swim breaststroke after a crawl. My diesel engine is made for a long distance,” added Persoon.
